Mangaluru Boosts Industrial Profile with Launch of Hi-Tech Tanker Calibration Unit

Mangaluru, June 27: In a major boost to the city’s industrial infrastructure, Mangaluru on Tuesday witnessed the launch of a state-of-the-art Tanker Calibration Unit by SS Metals and Industries. The facility, located in the Baikampady Industrial Area, promises to significantly enhance precision, safety, and regulatory compliance for businesses handling bulk liquids such as oil, fuel, and chemicals.

The inauguration took place at a formal event held at The Ocean Pearl Hotel and was attended by several dignitaries, including Rev. Dr. Dexter S. Maben of St. Andrew’s Church, Bengaluru; Sunil A Jonas, Director of Jonas Group; and Sandhya Deepa Jonas, Partner at SS Metals.

Senior industry figures such as Krishna Hegde Miyar, GGM (HR) at MRPL; Sanjay Parashar, Executive Director at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL); and Stany Leo Noronha, founder of Shiny Shipping & Logistics, were also present. The event saw participation from representatives of major oil firms, including IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, Reliance, Shell, and Nayara Energy. B. Sudarshan, Executive Director (Refinery), MRPL, was felicitated during the event for his contribution to the industry.

Facility to Set New Benchmark in Calibration

The newly launched calibration unit has received formal approval from the Department of Legal Metrology and is equipped to handle a wide range of tanker calibration requirements. The process ensures accurate measurement of liquid quantities—crucial for legal compliance, quality assurance, and environmental safety.

“This facility is more than an industrial service—it is a critical asset for businesses across the region,” said Sandhya Deepa Jonas. “It ensures consistency, transparency, and environmental responsibility in handling bulk liquids.”

Green Innovation at Core

SS Metals, the flagship enterprise of the Jonas Group founded by Sandhya Deepa Jonas in 2006, has been a frontrunner in sustainable industrial practices. In 2020, the company commissioned an advanced automated tanker washing unit alongside a cutting-edge Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), the first of its kind in Karnataka. Authorized by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), the unit recycles wastewater for reuse, drastically cutting down on freshwater consumption.

The Jonas Legacy of Enterprise

The Jonas Group’s journey is rooted in decades of industrial experience. Sunil A Jonas began his career in 1991 with stints in shipbreaking and the automobile sector in Dubai before launching Sannidhi Enterprises in 2001. He later diversified into mining and transport.

In 2006, his wife Sandhya Deepa Jonas launched SS Metals, marking the beginning of the group’s flagship operations. In 2010, Jonas Petro Products was established—today the only KSPCB-authorized waste oil management firm in Coastal Karnataka, pioneering solutions in hazardous waste recycling.

With the launch of the fully operational tanker calibration unit, Mangaluru strengthens its standing as a key industrial hub along India’s western coast. The facility not only elevates industry standards but also reinforces the city’s role in promoting sustainable, compliant, and forward-thinking enterprise.
